Astellas’ SDG Initiatives

Deepen our Engagement in Sustainability
A Focal Point of Corporate Strategic Plan 2021

We believe that our contribution to a sustainable society is essential for the continuation of our business operations. To effect real change in this area, we have made a commitment to both society and Astellas by establishing sustainability as a strategic goal in our Corporate Strategic Plan 2021.

To guide our sustainability activities, we have revised the materiality matrix in fiscal year 2021. While recognizing various social issues in recent years, we have made a concrete action plan for the identified material issues. We will contribute to the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through various business activities, including efforts to address key issues.

Using three approaches to improve “Access to Health”

Using three approaches to improve “Access to Health”

Astellas is acutely aware of the situation where barriers still remain for many people who have difficulty accessing the healthcare they need due to the lack of available treatments, poverty, healthcare system challenges and insufficient healthcare information.

Based on our corporate VISION of being “on the forefront of healthcare change to turn innovative science into VALUE for patients,” we contribute to realizing Goal 3 of SDGs, “Good Health and Wellbeing”, through providing science-based innovative VALUE and enhancing availability of our products. In recognition of Goal 17, “Partnerships for the Goals”, we have reinforced our continuous collaboration with our external partners to support their efforts to improve Access to Health.

One of the principles of the Astellas Charter of Corporate Conduct is that “In recognizing that harmony between the global environment and our business activities is a prerequisite to our corporate existence, we shall take proactive measures to conserve the global environment.” Astellas will need to sensitively grasp changes in the environment and continuously evolve in line with those changes.

Mitigating and adapting to the threat posed by climate change requires active involvement by national governments, local governments, corporations, citizens, and others. Recognizing that climate change will become a constraint on conducting sustained corporate activity, Astellas contributes to SDG Goal 13, “Climate Action,” by accelerating each activities such as reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, including indirect via the value chain, promoting the use of renewable energy, reducing GHG emissions associated with the usage of sales vehicles, and disclosing information based on the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

In April 2020, Astellas changed the electricity supply plan in three of its research and production facilities in Japan, to hydroelectric power, which is free of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Additionally, in December 2020, Astellas expressed its support for the recommendation of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), established by the Financial Stability Board (FSB).

Based on the recommendation, Astellas will analyze climate-related risks and opportunities, and proactively disclose information on climate change measures which began in FY 2021 around the four thematic areas of Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, and Metrics and Targets.
