Astellas Foundation

The Astellas Global Health Foundation ("AGHF") is an international philanthropic organization founded in 2018 through the merger of three foundations - the Astellas USA Foundation (AUSF), the Astellas European Foundation (AEF), and the Astellas Asia-Oceanic Foundation (AAOF) - and focused on helping to build "One World, A Healthier Tomorrow.” The AGHF efforts are focused on reducing significant unmet medical needs and health access issues facing global communities that are not receiving equitable healthcare to help make a sustainable impact on the health of people around the world.

The AGHF, and previous Foundations through Astellas, have provided more than $37 million in funding worldwide in total over the past 15 years.
This includes more than $13 million in grants provided by AGHF and grants provided earlier by the three prior foundations that formed the AGHF.

  • AGHF grants have helped a variety of global organizations working to solve major healthcare challenges, including helping improve access to mental health services in Kenya, expanding access to healthcare for children in Senegal, building community resilience efforts focused on improving mental health and psychological support for refugees in Uganda, and many additional efforts. Funding from the AGHF has impacted more than 31 million lives in many countries around the world.

  • These grants underscore the deep commitment of the AGHF to support its valued partners making a lasting impact on improving healthcare and creating a sustainable future for vulnerable communities in need.

The AGHF is primarily focused on supporting low- and middle-income communities where Astellas does not have a business presence.

Focus areas include:

Improving access to health: strengthening health infrastructure and enhancing availability and accessibility of healthcare for:

  1. Mental health;
  2. Neglected tropical and communicable disease care and treatment - such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria- that are prevalent in developing countries and low-income populations
  3. Children’s health; to help make a positive long-term impact on the world's most vulnerable populations

Building community resilience: proactively tackling major health challenges and minimizing avoidable deaths by strengthening infrastructure, improving systems, and providing training.

Providing disaster support: specific areas of focus include:

  1. Preparedness, surveillance and response efforts to reduce suffering caused by natural disasters (such as creating data and information collection systems that will monitor health risks posed by natural disasters)
  2. Surveillance and monitoring of biological emergencies (COVID-19 and potential health threats such as SARS, Influenza, Cholera, etc.)
  3. Initiatives that otherwise provide disaster support through preparedness, surveillance and/or response
