A key pillar of Astellas’ Access to Health strategy focuses on supporting and collaborating with external partners to remove barriers to healthcare and strengthen health systems. Providing patients with access to healthcare encompasses many factors, including improving health literacy, preventive care, screenings, treatments, and therapies. Astellas’ Access to Health support focuses on underserved populations in global locations where our company has a presence through action-based programs.

Healthcare System Strengthening

At Astellas, we are dedicated to improving healthcare and making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients, their caregivers, and local communities. We collaborate with charitable organizations to address health inequities and build healthier, more resilient communities as part of our Diagnosis and Linkage to Quality Care pillar in our commitment to improve Access to Health.

This core pillar of our Access to Health strategy is focused on removing barriers to healthcare and strengthening health systems worldwide. We believe that Access to Healthcare goes beyond simply providing treatments—it encompasses improving health literacy, preventive care, screenings, and therapies, all of which contribute to better health outcomes.

Access to Health initiatives at Astellas specifically target underserved populations in regions where Astellas operates, through impactful, action-driven programs.

To date, Astellas has proudly supported more than 70 projects aligned with our sustainability goals, reaching millions of people across the globe. Examples include:

  • In Mexico, our efforts include health literacy initiatives combined with early screening and detection programs for breast, cervical, and prostate cancers, ensuring timely treatment.
  • In Malaysia, we have partnered with local organizations to establish a nationwide cancer registry and raise awareness through a network of beauty salons and barber shops.
  • In countries such as Vietnam, the Dominican Republic, and Peru, we are working to unite stakeholders, strengthen health systems, and improve cancer survival rates.
  • Additionally, we support local charities near our offices in the USA, the UK, and other locations to improve healthcare access for marginalized communities, including transgender health initiatives.

Please note: Astellas does not accept unsolicited proposals or requests for funding.

Astellas Healthcare E-city

A visual of the virtual Astellas Healthcare E-city platform in Brazil which helps address access challenges

Astellas Pharma is working to address Access to Health (ATH) issues in various countries, including collaborating with external partners to help strengthen health systems and improve healthcare literacy.

In Brazil, gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of death, and early treatment intervention through improved medical literacy is an issue in accessing medical care. Brazil is a large country where growing disparity in medical care between urban and rural areas has become a significant social issue. Improving health literacy and reducing regional disparities are essential for improving access to medical care in Brazil.

To help address these access challenges, Astellas has collaborated with Pixit, a local Brazilian tech company, to develop the virtual "Astellas Healthcare E-city" platform. The E-city launched in 2023 with educational content on the early diagnosis and prevention of gastric cancer in partnership with local medical specialists. Anyone in Brazil with an internet connection can access the platform and educational resources to help contribute to greater equity for Brazilians by improving medical literacy across regions and in rural and urban locations. It also facilitates connections and builds community among those living with gastric cancer. Increased user knowledge, communication, and connections between users could lead to earlier diagnosis, potentially contributing to reduced healthcare expenditures and better health outcomes.

In 2024, the second content was launched to increase access to women’s health information. The innovative, virtual experience gives health education and support to women who are progressing through menopause.

In June 2025, Astellas expanded to the E-city in Colombia. Colombia, like Brazil, faces challenges related to Access to Health. Astellas believes that through the E-city initiative, it can contribute to improving health literacy.

Astellas will continue to look for opportunities in the future to use the virtual platform to implement additional healthcare-related applications.

Astellas believes that through this Astellas Healthcare E-city, we can contribute to further improving the medical literacy of the Brazilian people.

*1GOOD meddling: CNC, Ltd. defines GOOD meddling in this initiative as follows: To get close to the true wishes and thoughts of the person being meddlesome and to encourage them to believe in themselves. GOOD meddlesomeness is the result of the meddling that brightens the life of the meddler, the people around him or her, and the meddler's own life. GOOD Meddlesomeness is when the hearts of those touched by the meddlesomeness are inspired and ignited to take action in their own way.
