Patients are at the heart of everything we do at Astellas

Patients are at the heart of everything we do at Astellas

Our Patient Centricity vision is to enable a future for Astellas where healthcare innovation is driven by scientific possibility and patient need. The Patient Centricity team was created in 2019 to further focus and drive our work in the way we develop medicines by connecting patient and caregiver experiences and needs to our employees and science at every stage of our medicines’ development – from early research through to delivery and beyond.

Patients are the reason why Astellas exists, and they are the driving force at the centre of everything we do – patients are our purpose. PATIENTS ARE WHYTM.

Our commitment to patient communities

We believe that working with patients, patient organisations and caregivers (patient communities) will help us better understand how we can meet their needs throughout their healthcare journey. Through collaborating with patient communities, and understanding their needs and experiences, we can advance our ability to discover, develop and deliver effective medicines, and achieve our shared goal of improving the experiences and health outcomes of patients and caregivers.

Our commitment to patient communities

“At the end of the day, we are not here to treat a patient – we’re here to care for a person. Having a conscious awareness of that person in every activity, from every area of the company, every single day, ensures we will create the most meaningful innovations.”

Dr. Anthony Yanni, Senior Vice President and Head of Patient Centricity

Patient Partnerships Annual Report 2022/2023

Reflections from a year of listening, learning, and collaborating, is Astellas’ first Patient Partnerships Annual Report. The report highlights our global Patient Partnerships work from 2022-2023, with contributions from our patient organisation partners.

The purpose of the annual report is to summarise how and why Astellas works with patient communities, how patient insights help us prioritise our activities, and our intentions for continuing to put patients at the heart of our work in the future.

Doug Noland

“Patient insights are critical to Astellas having the whole picture and using that picture to develop medicines that meet the needs of patients. We can’t just push ahead based on what’s scientifically possible, we must go in eyes wide open as to what’s meaningful to patients and their caregivers.”

Doug Noland, Head of Partnerships, Astellas

The Astellas Patient Centricity Team

 The Astellas Patient Centricity Team

Our Patient Centricity team is made up of five different teams: Medical Intelligence and Patient InsightsPatient Insights and SolutionsPatient Partnerships, Behavioural Science Consortium and Culture & Integration.

Each team is committed to listening to patient communities and including these insights into our unique approach to patient-focused medicines’ development and delivery.

Find out more about each of our teams below.

Medical Intelligence and Patient Insights (MIPI)

Medical Intelligence and Patient Insights (MIPI)

The MIPI team collaborates with Research & Development colleagues in the early phase of medicines’ development. They speak directly to patients during this phase to better understand what it is like to live with a disease, the impact it has on day-to-day life, current challenges of managing a condition and what would help patients better manage their condition. This helps us to discover unmet patient needs and include the patient perspective in the drug development process for various disease areas

Patient Insights and Solutions (PInS)

Patient Insights and Solutions (PInS)

The PInS team works later in the medicines’ development process to understand patient experiences in day-to-day life. This is done through working directly with patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to understand the social and emotional factors impacting care. The findings from their projects are used to create solutions that address patient needs and overcome barriers to help achieve better health outcomes.

Patient Partnerships (PPat)

Patient Partnerships (PPat)

The PPat team is focused on building trusted relationships with patients, caregivers, and patient organisations to understand the person as well as their medical and support needs. PPat actively engages with patient communities around the world to listen to and learn about their journey. These insights are shared with other teams at Astellas to ensure we keep the patient at the heart of what we do and make informed decisions with them in mind. These relationships not only help us learn from patients to inform care delivery, but also better address their needs in our drug discovery and development efforts.

Behavioural Science Consortium (BSC)

Behavioural Science Consortium (BSC)

The BSC team helps Astellas to better understand patient behaviours in a real-life setting. They collect and provide useful information that helps us understand how we can help to address comprehensive patient care needs. Through an intimate understanding of how patients behave, feel, and seek care, we can most-meaningfully address issues impacting care and health outcomes.

Culture and Integration (C&I)

Culture and Integration (C&I)

The C&I team implements the Patient Centricity vision in line with Astellas’ company strategy and processes. The team helps colleagues around the world behave and think in a patient centric way, helping us to create a culture in which every employee in every role thinks about the patient first.
